Ca' Marcanda Description
On the nose, fruits are dominant with notes of black currants and blueberries. At a second glance, floral elements and salty notes emerge, followed by fresh hints of pine nuts and graphite. The entrance on the palate is sweet, displaying notes of sweet bell pepper and lily of the valley. Wood is well integrated and donates light hints of sweet tobacco leaf.
The 2021 vintage started with a harsh and rainy winter that brought a good water reserve of 550 mm between October 2020 and February 2021. Spring was cold and dry with two frosts, which delayed the vegetative cycle of the vines and fortunately caused little damage. The following summer saw only sporadic drizzle in June – one of the driest of the last decade. The summer remained cool which put the vines under less water stress and allowed the berries to ripen slowly, thanks in part to fresh northwest winds in July and August. The harvest began a week later than usual. The 2021 vintage was a very dry but moderately cool year, yielding wines of great concentration, structure, color, and acidity. The wines of the 2021 vintage have a classic, Bolgheri style; they are generous wines with powerful, round tannins and ripe, intense fruit.
Ca’Marcanda, Gaja’s estate in Bolgheri, was born in 1996 propelled by Angelo Gaja’s ambition to challenge himself with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
WINE The name Ca’Marcanda derives from a Piedmontese dialect expression which can be translated as the “house of endless negotiations” and refers to the several meetings between the previous landowners and Angelo Gaja, a very long negotiation finally concluded in 1996 with the land purchase. This is the wine that takes the name from the Estate, representing the pinnacle of the production for the family in Bolgheri.
Wine Spectator: 97 Points
Pure and elegant, with saturated flavors of violet, black currant, blackberry, licorice and iron. This is so beautifully balanced that it feels almost seamless, even at this young stage, offering a sleek profile and endless aftertaste that echoes the fruit. The oak is very well-integrated, with polished tannins
Vinous Media: 97 Points
The 2021 Camarcanda is a fabulous wine from the Gaja family, the best they have ever made at their Bolgheri property. The wines here have been through some ups and downs, but there seems to be a greater focus over these last few years. Silky, aromatic and wonderfully pure, the 2021 Camarcanda offers a super, contemporary expression of Bolgheri with plenty of coastal sunshine and warmth, but nothing excessive. Silky tannins frame the exceptionally polished, nuanced finish. The 2021 is so alluring.
Wine Advocate: 97 Points
This a bold and beautifully concentrated wine with a brilliant character that is best described as Rubenesque. It shows supple texture and deep richness supported by sweet fruit and raspberry tart. The ripe, well-managed tannins cede to tingling freshness that adds energy and life.

Bottled in July of 2022, the 2021 Ca'Marcanda has a dark saturated ruby hue and seamless aromatics of graphite, black cherry liqueur, cocoa powder, and forest herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with great structure, focus and length, and wonderful richness, it’s incredibly even in its balance and has a very long finish. It’s going to need a few years to improve and show its best, but this is a remarkable wine from this stunning vintage.
