One of my favorite wines in the world, the Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis is all old vine Grenache from the Colombis lieu-dit located on the western side of the appellation. The 2019 sports a healthy ruby/purple color as well as a classic Grenache bouquet of black raspberries, herbes de Provence, peppery spice, and flowery incense. Already complex, it’s full-bodied, has a wonderful sense of purity, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This is power paired with elegance, and few wines do it so well. It’s going to drink beautifully for 15-20+ years.
Wine Spectator: 94 Points
So silky this version seems expressive at first, but the core of cassis, cherry purée and raspberry fruit is tightly coiled, with both chalk and iron notes having their say, stretching out in unison through the finish. Black tea and garrigue hints peek in as well, which is a sign of what's to come after cellaring. Best from 2023 through 2036.
