Torres Description
Varietal Composition: 50% Tempranillo 30% Garnacha, 20% Moneu
The wine exhibits a dark cherry red color. It’s nose is intense, filled with ripe fruit notes such as raspberry jam, complemented by toasted nuances and a hint of spice. On the palate, it is robust, supported by fine, pleasing tannins.
Familia Torres founded its first winery in Villafranca del Penedès in 1870, over 150 years ago, but its roots in the winegrowing traditions of Spain date back to the 16th century. Five generations have carried the family business forward, passing on their passion for wine culture from parents to children — a passion steeped in respect for land and tradition, and a firm belief in innovation. Today the family focuses on wines from unique vineyards and historical estates, as well as the recovery of ancestral varieties.
Since the 1980s, Familia Torres have been recovering ancestral varieties to restore Catalonia’s viticultural heritage and combat climate change. Some of these varieties, like Moneu from Penedès, not only have great potential for winemaking but are also highly resistant to high temperatures and drought. We are thrilled to now include Moneu in the Clos Ancestral blend.
Vinous Media: 93 Points
The 2022 Red Clos Ancestral combines 45% Moneu, 35% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha Negra, all sourced from Penedes. Sixty percent of the wine was aged for ten months in used barrels, and the Moneu spent the same time in amphorae, On the nose, it offers strawberry and cherry aromas along with a faintly leafy note. Dry and lean, the cleansing palate lingers with a saline, chalky texture. Delicious and thirst quenching.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
The new bright-red 2022 Clos Ancestral has a primary nose, fruit driven, young and fresh, with notes of fruits of the forest and aromatic herbs. It was produced with a blend of the recovered Moneu grape with Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) and Garnacha Tinta from a dry and warm year. It's a shame that the blend doesn't show the character of the mysterious Moneu, which is said to ripen slowly and keep moderate alcohol and good acidity, but that's lost in a blend. The wine is fresh and delicate, medium-bodied, approachable and elegant, but I'd like to see Moneu on its own... They produced 42,000 liters of this.
